ORVIETO: CLASSIC TUSCAN HILL TOWN

Orvieto is a classic example of the hundreds of villages built atop the flat summit of volcanic rock. It dates back to Etruscan times and apparently once had 30,000 inhabitants. Today it is noteworthy for its immense church of white, green and pink marble. We had to ascend to the town via a funicular. The view from the town is spectacular. My lunch came from a local butcher shop -- a sandwich of highly seasoned wild boar meat followed by an espresso and gelato. A lovely interlude before we arrive at the craziness of Rome!
