CARRARA: LAND OF MARBLE
This was an eye-opening experience for all of us. Our expert coach driver, Peter, drove us and our local guide, Umberto, up to the marble quarry in Carrara, which has been excavating marble for more than 2000 years. I asked him if they were concerned about leveling the mountains; he said perhaps they would have to worry in about another 2000 years. He did say, however, that he thought the emphasis on quantity rather than quality was keeping the town stuck in the past. He said they make more selling the marble dust than large blocks. This is the place where Michelangelo actually worked and supervised the quarrying of the marble he used for may of his sculptures. It gave us a new appreciation for these works when we saw them in Florence.
