EVENSONG

What a delightful custom this is! Prof. Chapman says he goes almost every day. It's less than one hour long each day at 6 p.m. The service we attended at the gorgeous Christ Church was a combination of singing, prayer and gospel readings. The seating arrangements are unique. Prof. Chapman ushered Creighton and me into little high seats facing the altar, but most of them faced each other the length of the Cathedral. We all had red velvet cushions on our benches and little shaded reading lights for our hymn books. Creighton became so soothed that his head kept falling on his chest looking for a rest. The beautiful trained voices of the choir (which was in the same seats as the congregation) echoed hauntingly in the lofty ceiling. Afterwards we all went to eat at a cheery Japanese restaurant called Wagamama, which serves food so fresh that they bring out each dish as it becomes ready, even if not everyone is served at the same time. The perfect ending to a perfect day.
