BATH: PRIDE, PREJUDICE AND PARTYING
In Jane Austen's day, Bath was THE place to be; an industry of indulgence had grown up around the curative waters, all beginning with the Roman invaders. We were able to see the original, excavated spa, which looked like an ornate swimming pool and was, indeed, impressive; but the indulgent culture is alive and well in the 21st century. The crowded streets are jammed with street performers of all persuasions -- musicians, jugglers, mimes, unicyclists, even a barbershop quartet (actually, it was more of an octet). The fine weather added to the festive mood. The elegance of the 18th century has been replaced with a more democratic, chaotic world of play.
