COWLEY ROAD

We've been spending time on Cowley Road lately. It's where a number of immigrant communities are located -- Africans, South Americans, Arabs, Indians, even Polish and Russians. The photo shows a former traditional English pub transformed into a Chinese restaurant. Some Oxfordians are uneasy about what they see as a dilution of the quintessential Britishness of this special city. Others welcome it. I'm reading a book that focuses on this issue, called ISOLARIAN: A DIFFERENT OXFORD JOURNEY, by James Attlee. He's actually a resident of the area and writes about the shops we visit. We ate at an Indian restaurant the other day called Majliss that was absolutely excellent. The waiter was so attentive that he whipped our napkins up from the table with a flourish and placed them on our laps. What an experience!
